Ney: Background Independence as a Constraint on Fundamental Theories

Abstract

In this paper, I look at Lee Smolin’s arguments for a constraint or norm guiding fundamental physical theories, that they be background independent. Smolin has used this constraint to argue against string theories. I offer a critique of these arguments in the context of broader issues of the role of fundamental theories.
